Score points with your hand and crib to be the first player to peg around the board!

Cribbage combines strategy and critical thinking with math skills to form a game that’s easy to learn and a delight to play. From dealing to counting, pegging and beyond, the game will keep students engaged at every phase, testing motor and cognitive functions under the guise of fun! The game is best played with 2 or 4 players.

How to Play

Students cut the deck to see who the dealer is—low card wins. The dealer shuffles and deals cards to each player (6 cards for 2 players, 5 cards for 3-4 players). Each player assesses his/her hand to try and to make points. Accumulate points with all basic poker combinations (pairs, flushes, straights, etc.), as well as numerical additions of 15. The object is to earn the most points possible with each hand, to move your pegs around the cribbage board. 2 cards from each hand (1 card for 3-4 players) will be thrown into “the crib.” This is a second hand for the dealer that counts in addition to their original hand

After cards are thrown in the crib, the deck is cut and a card placed face-up atop it. This is a communal card that can be used by any player when counting their hand. Before hand counting begins, however, the count-up phase must be played. This involves the player opposite the dealer to play a card from their hand, then the next player plays, and so on until the numbers reach 31. Points can be earned for pairs, straights, 15 or 31. When 31 is reached or players cannot play without busting, counting starts over. When all cards are played, hand counting begins.

The player opposite the dealer counts their hand first and moves their pegs accordingly. Then the dealer counts their hand, moves their pegs, then counts their crib, and moves their pegs again. Dealership then transfers to the next person and the cycle repeats. The object of the game is to be the first to score 121 points, moving your pegs up and down the track until they reach the end.
