Alpha-Spot Gameplay
The objective of these common core spelling games is to be the team that spells the most words within a predetermined amount of time. Divide the class into 2 equal teams and scatter the spots around the playing area with the letter side facing up. Designate a gathering area and writer for each team and a place a piece of paper and writing utensil in the area. Play begins when the music starts.
When the music starts, students skip around the playing area between and around spots. When the music stops, each student must move to an Alpha-Spot. Once all of the students have found a spot, they pick up their spot and bring it to their team area. For the next 5 minutes, students use their letter to spell as many words as possible. After 5 min, the paper with all of the words written is given to the teacher and the teacher decides the winner of the round. Then, the spots are re-scattered and play continues for a predetermined number of rounds.
The game promotes both spelling and exercise, so students are learning and having fun running around all at once. It gets the entire class involved in a simple, easy to set up activity!
