A great game for building vocabulary!
See what your students can do with all of the letters of the alphabet at their disposal! Scrabble is a game anyone can play, and it’s the best way to help students expand their vocabulary while also practicing their spelling skills. An element of strategy is also important, to make sure your tiles are landing on double and triple letter scores, instead of letting your opponent take them!
How to Play
Scrabble is a point-based game that's determined by the value of each letter played. Each letter includes a value indicated on its tile, making it easy to count the value of an entire word through simple addition.
The game starts by placing all 100 letter tiles face down. Players select a random tile to decide who goes first—the letter closest to A wins and a blank tile trumps all. Each student then selects enough tiles to fill their rack (7). Player 1 then goes first, playing a word that crosses the exact center of the board. After the score is calculated, the next player can play a word, however it must intersect with the existing word on the board. Points are counted for each new word formed. The process continues through each player's turn. After their turn, players select new tiles to replace those played.
More points can be achieved by placing tiles on double and triple letter spaces, as well as double and triple word boxes. Overall tile or word values are adjusted accordingly. Players can also lay tiles to form multiple words with existing tiles on the board, in which case they're able to score points for each word formed. Double and triple letter and word spaces apply to every word that utilizes the tile laid on that space.
The game is over when all letters have been laid. The person with the highest point total is the winner!
