Giant Chess

Chess is the oldest of the board games, played between 2 opponents on opposite sides of a board containing 64 squares of alternating colors. This giant chess set features a heavy-duty mat, designed to be walked on during play, with grommets at each corner to secure it with stakes for outdoor use. Pieces are high density plastic, yet lightweight for easy moving.

Keep Students Active

Chess promotes critical thinking, risk-weighing, strategy, and foresight. Students will need to be ever-cognizant of the board, including where their pieces are, where their opponent’s pieces are, what moves are available, and more. As each new move is made, assessment is required, keeping students on their toes until the final checkmate occurs!

The brain isn’t the only thing getting a workout with this giant chess set! Students will have to get up and moving if they want to get their opponent’s king. To move, they’ll need to walk onto the board, pick up pieces, and physically move with them. A single match can be a great workout!

How to Play

Each player starts with 16 pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 8 pawns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the other king. Checkmate happens when the king is in a position to be captured (in check) and cannot escape from capture. Each of the 6 different pieces has its own move set, which can be used to eliminate other pieces from the board or trap them from moving. For example, bishops may only move diagonally of the color square they start on, while knights can only move in an L shape, jumping over pieces as they move.
